Sculptural leaves. An easygoing rhythm.

Snake Plants

Upright forms, bold patterns, and varieties with very different silhouettes. Choose a compact rosette for a small spot or taller leaves for a more prominent place.

Snake Plants from Plants and Things

Light

Bright, indirect light supports growth. Snake plants can tolerate lower light, but they still need daylight or a suitable grow light. Introduce stronger sun gradually.

Watering

Allow the potting mix to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and drain the excess. Check the mix rather than following a fixed weekly schedule; dimmer or cooler conditions slow drying.

Soil & container

Use a well-draining potting mix and a container with drainage. Avoid a pot that holds water around the roots. Persistent wetness can cause root rot.

Your plant-parent fit

Well suited to independent and easygoing plant parents who prefer a plant that dries between waterings. Frequent attention is welcome; frequent watering is usually not.

Space

Size depends on the variety. Compact types can suit small spaces, while taller forms need room for their upright leaves. Ask about the mature size before choosing.

Pets

Snake plants are not a pet-safe match for cats or dogs that may chew plants. Explore Haworthias if you need a non-toxic alternative.
